The Dreaming Dirt

Tonight! Round FIVE of the Dreaming Dirt will happen from 7:30 to 11pm at Turn Turn Turn.
Sign up sheet will be posted at 7 pm, but you can also send me an email and I can easily put you on the list beforehand. Virtual participants are welcome. We can connect with you via SKYPE. Each participant will have approximately 5 to 10 minutes to share their work. If you plan on doing something that requires plugging in or projecting, we have you covered.

The Dreaming Dirt is a multidisciplinary creative forum hosted by me, Hannah Zhalih Mickunas, the FREEFORM PORTLAND. This event is served up open mic style.

Freeform Portland Portland DJ, Dessicant (AKA, J. Simpson) will be spinning tunes before and after the performances to make this event extra spicy.

Please bring pom poms or other cheering accoutrements to support friends and comrades.

This is an OPEN space for creativity and ideas. You can perform anything, wild or mundane. You can read something you've written or something someone else has written. You can make a declaration about the state of the world. You can give a lecture on mud. You can do your taxes. You can sing an aria. You can ask for collective brainstorming on world peace. You can play the spoons with your elbows. You can knit a tiny sweater. You can start an impromptu band or play something with an existing band. You can show up as the UPS driver delivering packages filled with dust.

So far there have been musicians, filmmakers, animators, performance artists, conceptual artists, poets, activists, healers, opera singers, live sewing, live drawing and collaborative internet searches. We have also had a few live virtual performances from amazing folks in other states and countries.

Consider your options. There are many. You can hum. You can hop. You can lounge. You can shimmy. You can warble. You can strum. You can lecture. You can dress-up. You can twirl. You can swallow. You can crawl. You can sit. You can read. You can declare. You can laugh. You can shuffle. You can improvise. You can heal. You can bang. You can rumble. You can refine. You can mingle. You can write. You can cry. You can canter. You can bark. You can howl. You can dust. You can rise. You can follow. You can disappear. You can magic. You can free. You can gather. You can note. You can unplug. You can quiet. You can revolve. You can hold. You can hug. You can stretch. You can bury. You can question. You can mop. You can brush. You can… You can yodel, you can whine, you can rip, you can flex, you can usher, you can hug, you can wallow, you can churn, you can pass, you can wince, you can summon, you can happen, you can itch, you can grin, you can roil, you can stumble, you can jump, you can hiccup, you can cavort, you can slosh, you can haggle, you can trim, you can treat, you can yawn, you can gulp, you can perch, you can prod, you can slither, you can hope, you can wiz, you can blaze, you can...

The Dreaming Dirt

Last night's Dreaming Dirt was a tremendous success. A perfect balance of words, images, body, motion, sound, humor, noise, heart and absurdity. Mary Edwards opened up with a virtual performance of her song Time and I . Stevyn Llewellyn made some rather beautiful discordance as microscopic details of waves and blooming flowers flickered behind. Gabriel Liston did live sketches (see below) of both the audience and the performers while sitting in a chair at the corner of the stage. Juliet Gagnon read a stunning prose piece all the way from Eindhoven. Lindsey Allgood considered feminine intimacy with the squeeze-pop of balloons and hand painted eggs. Shane Paulson screened an autobiographical animated video/sound work. Arielle Adkin discussed a new work in process in relation to post-breakup dreams. Stephanie Lavon Trotter looped and weaved operatic vocals through microphones and distortion pedals. Jay Ponteri read from Robert Walser, Mary Ruefle and Jay Ponteri. Gary Wiseman and Hannah Mickunas harmonized with a makeshift capo, eyes closed. Justin Oswald lubed up his body with lotion then climbed in and then out of a giant balloon. Jason Hughes went acoustic with a beautifully quiet folk/pop tune. My co-host, Stephanie Brachmann read two hilarious flash fiction pieces. And my wife, Felicity Fenton with the help of several whirling vacuums, read a list poem about dust.
