Some Sunday Enchantments

Justin Torres’s Blackouts
Spring’s relief
Jump Jump Records
Anything by Sallie Tisdale
The smell of Japanese skimmia
Kagyu Changchub Chuling sangha gatherings
Dogwood blooms
The quote below from Viola Spolin from her book on improvisation
Suite Botanique by Sergio Diaz De Rojas

“Very few of us are able to make direct contact with ourselves. Our simplest move out into the environment is interrupted by our need for favorable comment or interpretation by established authority. We either fear that we will not get approval, or we accept outside comment and interpretation unquestionably.
In a culture where approval/disapproval has become the predominant regulator of effort and position, and often the substitute for love, our personal freedoms are dissipated.”

C.R. Foster at Powell's

Next Sunday, February 25th at Powells City of Books in the (now weirdly windy and cold) city of Portland, Oregon, I'll be in conversation with C.R. Foster about their newest speculative-climate-horror-fiction gem, The Rain Artist, soon to be released by Moonstruck Books.

The book offers a riveting glimpse into a future marked by the dire consequences of capitalism and environmental degradation. Foster’s prose cuttingly portrays a world on the brink, evoking a sense of dwindling beauty, resources, and despair. It's a visionary, timely, unsettling, and necessary book that deserves a lot of eyeballs. Hope to see you there!

Love for (Un)romantics

In the spirit of Yellow Chapel work, This week I invited Consuelo Wise, Shannon Rickman, Gabe Flores, Arielle Renee, Dakota Lacroix, Marina Tait, Mary Edwards, Stephen Kurowski, Kellie Maledy, and Chelsea Clark-James to send over love lists that go beyond the romantic realm. The aftermath was woven into several unconventional love songs (by Richie Havens, Kate Bush. Laurie Anderson, The B-52s, Congress-Woman Malinda Jackson Parker and more) then piped out onto Freeform Portland radio waves.
Big love!
