accidental opportunities

So far, having a broken kneecap has been an invitation to:

put socks and underwear on with one straight leg and one bent leg

move in ways I haven't moved before

sit for hours and hours and let people take care of me without feeling guilty

feel what it's like not being able to get up and get myself a glass of water

meditate through intense physical pain

empathize with people who deal with major disabilities every day of their lives

read and read and read

watch Her and TED talks and UBUweb TV

write a postcard to grandma dot and a letter to mom

listen to big music, little musicians

sit on the back porch and feel the warmth of the sun on my face

teach Beckett how to fetch my stuff

take a shower with one leg hanging out of the shower

use my crutches as appendages

slow down and enjoy the slowing down

Go outside. Good things happen outside.
