An Interview with an artist I love - Bâlâ Atabek

Bâlâ Atabek was born in Istanbul and raised by a journalist father and a sociologist mother. Her grandmother had quite an impact on her; she was a philologist and an art-enthusiast. Bâlâ entered conservatory when she was 16, with the influence of her family. She received her first professional job when she was 23. She currently has a professional acting career in Turkey, takes photographs and makes music as well. She continues to be influenced by Istanbul and her grandmother.

You can check out her website HERE.

Questions by FF answered by Bâlâ Atabek:

Q: What is your emotional state at this very moment?

I recently moved out of my apartment. There's been some big changes in my life. They made me open to some positive flows.

Q: How do you describe your creative process to family members who may not be super privy to the art world?

I don't describe, I create and they follow. Sometimes trying to describe art only makes an artist lose time.

Q: What is the first thing you want to eat most mornings?

A delicious cheese sandwich and a good coffee.

Q: When you were a child, did you ever have a recurring dream?

I didn't have a recurring dream, but my dreams almost always included the sea and boats.

Q: If you were to choose one color to represent who you are as a person, what would that color be?

Orange.

Q: How do you motivate yourself to make stuff?

Sometimes I can motivate myself, sometimes I really can't. My travels motivate me the most. American films of the 50's and the jazz music I listen to gets me going for sure. I realized that rain and snow have big effects on my creative process.

Q: How would you describe your personal scent?

Like winter tea.

Q: What are you reading right now?

"Bohemes" by Dan Franck.

Q: If you were to choose a name other than the one you currently have, what name would that be?

I love my name so much that I can't imagine being called something else.

Q: Are you experiencing any physical discomfort at the moment?

Nope, thankfully.

Q: Can you recommend a song for the world to listen to?

Cannonball Adderley - Autumn Leaves
