It's been a massively busy week getting all the final touches ready for my upcoming show. 100 jars have been filled with various goodies, 4 nude suits hand-sewed, shelves built, signs made, packaging designed and applied. But I wouldn't have been able to do any of this without help. Special thanks to my mammals-in-crime for helping to make this happen - Michael T. Hensley, Chelsea Clark-James, Arielle Adkin, Gabe Blair, Justin Oswald and Donnie the goat, the brothers and sister at Place, Kim from Kim's creations and her strange Vietnamese friend Richard and Linnton Feed and Seed, Here is a bit about the show:
Exhibition: Five June 18 – August 14, 2011 Opening Reception: June 18, 6p – 9p - Place PDX Artists: Felicity Fenton, William Rihel III, Ryan Burns and Roger Peet, Stephen Kurowski and Marina Tait Exhibition: Five
My multimedia installation (De-consume) mirrors a high-end boutique; its interior exhibits objects, smells, and actions not usually found in stores. Throughout the duration of the exhibit, there will be three store events: A Simple meal (this will be a raw - and freshly plucked from an organic garden - smorgasbord). A sniffing booth (willing participants will sniff each other in all possible and impossible places). A mud roll (myself and any other participants will be invited to sit in and/or roll around in mud)
Roger Peet and Ryan Burns Viande de Brousse (a bushmeat food cart) is a small food cart that superficially resembles a peripatetic roadside attraction of Sub-Saharan Africa. In urban centers throughout the region, and indeed throughout the less-developed world, enterprising individuals can generate a living with little more than a pot, some supplies, and a few raw ingredients - all transported within a simple wooden framework. A small cooking range, a folding counter, and a tarpaulin are assembled together to make a self-contained mobile bistro for cooking simple dishes. The food cart is built and decorated in functional and festive style; however, it serves an unorthodox and unsettling food item: the hands of our fellow primates. www.viandedebrousse.com/ Roger Peet is an artist and printmaker living in Portland. He is a member of the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, a group of North American artists making socially and environmentally engaging art. Ryan Burns is Portland-based artist represented by Barristers Gallery in New Orleans and Augen Gallery in Portland.
William Rihel III Island of Misfit Toys / Paradise Lost is a mixed media installation comprised of objects primarily found at the city dump. The mass of garbage is elevated by a manmade armature, much like a pier or wooden roller coaster, which appears to be under continual construction due to the increasing number of discarded objects. Rihel received a BFA from Pratt institute in Brooklyn. He currently resides in Portland, Oregon.
