Found - a conversation about 2 dead fish: Fishy88 - I have a 10 gallon freshwater tank with 3 Snails and 2 African Dwarf Frogs. I recently purchased two Dalmatian/Marble Mollys. Before putting them into the tank, I changed out the water and cleaned the plastic plants. I put my frogs and snails back in after having checked the temperature. It was 68 degrees, so I plugged in the new tank heater I bought. It raised the temperature to 72 degrees which was PetCo's recommended temperature for Mollys.
After putting the frogs and snails back into the tank, I allowed the Mollys to sit in their PetCo bag in my aquarium. (For 15 minutes, so that the water temperatures would match.) I fed the fish each day and fed my frogs. (The snails eat the frog food too.)
Within 3 days of putting the Mollys in the tank, one of them started to look sickly. It sat at the bottom of the tank and didn't move much. The other swam and floated happily around the tank.
The day after I noticed the sick behavior of the one fish, I found both dead. I was worried that my PH levels were acidic so I bought a testing kit. It shows that my tank has a level of 7.4 which I thought was acceptable. I have tablets for maintaining my PH levels, however, I have not used them yet.
Does anyone know what caused the fish to die so suddenly? Any help is appreciated!
Champy10 - sorry to hear about your fish mabey you can ask the people at pet co what happened
Fish Keeper - Maybe its because you only purchesed 2 when mollies fare better in larger groups but it could also have been from being in a bag for to long or it could just be some freak thing other wise im stumped hope this helps.
lilrayjr2-I'm no expert or anything but I started with a 10 gallon tank before also and my first 2 fish were Molly's. Now what I have learned with Molly is that they for some reason Molly's love there privacy and they also like a lot of hiding spaces (for breeding purposes). The guy at the pet store that has helped me maintain all of my first tanks told me that when I had a 10 gallon tank and had multiple fish they all require a lot of air. He also said the trip from the store to my home will also but stress on them, he recommended me to get a stress reliever also.
